Before you start

Now you have PredictMail set up on your DataHub and your device; it is time to test PredictMail works from start to finish each way your device could be connected and an email received.

Important Note: You must complete this step before you head offshore.

For this step, while testing, we highly recommend you have all of the following:

  • Access to high-speed Internet e.g. cellular data or Wi-Fi.

  • An alternative email address. We recommend using your regular email address.

  • Your DataHub, powered on.

  • Your GO! or GO exec devices, fully charged, powered on and with the external antenna connected if you have one.

  • A USB charging cable, if you plan to use your mobile to provide Internet to the DataHub via a USB tether.

  • If you have set up PredictMail on your mobile device and plan to test it in this step, it is also helpful to have a laptop or large-screen tablet for logging into the DataHub.

Each stage of this testing will validate that your PredictMail set-up works in a slightly more complex configuration. By working through these tests methodically, if you encounter an issue, isolating and resolving it will be easier.

A) Send and Receive PredictMail without the Datahub

This stage can be done anywhere you have access to high-speed Wi-Fi or cellular data using any single device.

Sending Emails

  • Connect your device to high-speed Wi-Fi Internet via cellular data. If using a laptop in dock you may need to connect it to your mobile device via a hotspot.

  • Open the Email Client your PredictMail account has been added to.

  • Create a new email.

  • Enter your alternative email address in the "To" address as the recipient.

  • Add a subject line.

  • Add text to the email body.

  • Click or tap to send.

  • Wait 5-10 seconds until you are sure it has been sent; manually send/receive or sync. On an iPad, you may need to tap, hold and drag down the touchscreen.

  • Wait 1-2 minutes then check the inbox for your alternative email address.

You should receive the test email within a minute. If you do not receive it either manually sync the client, or close and reopen the app, allowing it time to resync upon load. If you still do not receive the email check your Spam folder, Clutter or Other inbox view.

If you still cannot find your test email please double-check your PredictMail client setup.

Receiving Emails

  • Open the email you've received to your alternative email address.

  • Reply to the email and add some new text in the body of the reply.

  • Click or tap to send.

  • Wait 5-10 seconds until you are sure it has been sent, or manually send/receive.

  • Open your PredictMail account inbox and wait for 1-2 minutes for the email to arrive. You may need to manually send/receive or sync it.

You should receive the test email within a minute. If you do not receive it either manually sync the client, or close and reopen the app, allowing it time to resync upon load. If you still do not receive the email check your Spam folder, Clutter or Other inbox view.

If you still cannot find your test email please check you have set up the incoming mail server settings correctly.

If you successfully receive the reply, then you can send and receive emails without the DataHub and are ready to move on to the next step.

B) Send and Receive PredictMail with the Datahub using a Wi-Fi or a Cellular connection

This stage can also be done anywhere you have access to high-speed Wi-Fi or cellular coverage. If you have set up PredictMail on your mobile device, this step is best done with a laptop or tablet device too, for checking and using the DataHub.

Sending Emails

  • Connect to the DataHub via Wi-Fi or an Ethernet cable, then open a Chrome or Safari browser and type 10.10.10.1 in the URL bar.

  • Log in with the default username admin and password admin.

  • Connect your DataHub to the Internet via Wi-Fi or a USB-tethered hotspot.

  • Check on the Internet Status page that your DataHub is online. At least one box on this WAN interfaces page must be green and display Status: Online.

  • Open the Email Client that your PredictMail account has been added to.

  • Enter your alternative email address in the "To" address as the recipient.

  • Add a subject line.

  • Add text to the email body.

  • Click or tap to send.

  • Wait 5-10 seconds until you are sure it has been sent, or manually send/receive.

Connection Policy - How the DataHub send and receives email

As your device is connected to the DataHub, the email is sent to the DataHub and stored temporarily in the DataHub's Outbox until it connects to the PredictMail servers on the Internet, based on its connection policy, to send it.

Every time the Datahub makes a PredictMail Connection, all emails in the DataHub Outbox will be sent, and any incoming emails sent to your PredictMail account will be downloaded to the DataHub Inbox. The Connection Policy your DataHub is configured with will determine when a PredictMail connection is made.

To check your Connection Policy:

  • Click on PredictMail

  • Click Connection

  • Check what option is selected in the Policy setting.

  • Immediately on sending mail with polling on tracking interval is recommended.

Is it important you understand how the Connection Policies for sending and receiving email. Please review the table below for a brief description of the options.

Connection Policy

Description

Immediately on sending mail

(Default setting)

A PredictMail connection is made every time you send an email. You must send an email or open a connection manually to receive emails.

On tracking/polling interval

(Only visible and activated if PredictMail via Iridium and Poll on Tracking are selected during Iridium GO! or GO exec Quick Start)

A PredictMail Connection will be made each time your DataHub connects to report your GPS position over the Wi-Fi, USB-tethered, or Ethernet WAN Internet. If a lower-cost connection is unavailable, the DataHub will fall over to connect via your GO! or GO exec.

Immediately on sending mail with polling on tracking interval. (Recommended)

A PredictMail Connection will be made each time you send an email. If no email is sent during a period, a connection will be made the next time your DataHub is connected to report your GPS position.

Manually start/stop the transfer from the tools menu.

A connection will only be made when you click the green CONNECT button to send/receive.

If your policy is set to Immediately on sending mail, then check the inbox for your alternative email address and you should receive the test email within 1-2 minutes of the connection being completed. If you don't receive it, manually send/receive, then check your Spam, Clutter or Other inbox view.

If, however, you have set up a GO! or GO exec using the Quick Start pages, and enabled PredictMail via Iridium and Poll on Tracking, then the DataHub will have set your transport to Least Cost (NET failover to GO!) and your policy to On tracking/polling interval. This will have queued your message in the Outbox to wait until it next connects to send your next position report.

Check if it is in the DataHub Outbox by clicking PredictMail on the left menu and Outbox on the top menu.

To manually prompt the connection and send your queued email for this test:

  • On the top menu, click Connection.

  • Click the green CONNECTION button.

  • Wait and watch the Log refresh and display the mail sending.

  • On the top menu, click Outbox to check if the email is not there and has been sent.

You should receive the test email within 1-2 minutes of the connection being completed. If you don't receive it, manually send/receive, then check your Spam, Clutter or Other inbox view. When you have received it, you are ready to test receiving email.

Receiving Emails

  1. With the test email you have sent to your alternative email address, reply to the email, enter some text in the body of the reply and click send.

  2. Depending on your Connection Policy, you can either wait until the next scheduled interval or tracking position is reported or prompt the PredictMail Connection again manually as you did in the previous step. Once connected, your DataHub will download all pending inbound emails to your Datahub Inbox.

  3. On the top menu, click Inbox.

  4. Check if the DataHub is displaying your new message in the Inbox.

  5. If you see your new message waiting to be collected in the DataHub Local Inbox, open your PredictMail account inbox and wait for the emails to be transferred from the DataHub Inbox. You may need to manually send/receive or refresh the inbox to sync it.

  6. If you successfully receive the reply, then you can send and receive emails with the DataHub and are ready to move on to the next step.

Continue to Step 4

When you have successfully tested sending and receiving emails on your device through the internet directly, and through the DataHub connected to high-speed Internet, you are ready to move on to Step 4: Send and Receive PredictMail on an Iridium Connection with GPS tracking.
