Why is Weather Routing data different from the Weather Maps for my coastal passage?

The Weather Routing / Departure Planning algorithm always uses the highest resolution forecast data available, however the weather GRIB/Map will be the 50 km or 100 km resolution based on what you have downloaded. If you are seeing a difference between the route and map, it is the difference between the 1km/ 8 km forecast data (The best data available) that the Weather Router uses versus the 50/100km resolution GRIB/Map.

The Weather Routing output shown in the Wind Tables, or in the route pop up box (The pop up box shows if you click anywhere on a coloured weather route line) will show the highest resolution data available. This data is the most ACCURATE.

Use the WIND map overlay to get an understanding of the general synoptic wind pattern, and treat the pop-up box and Weather Routing Tables as the most accurate data.

PredictWind App and PredictWind Website

In the PredictWind App or Forecast website, high resolution maps are available for the weather models for each forecast location you have set in your account.

Weather Routing maps only show the 50km resolution map across the whole route for a general synoptic overview.

To see the highest resolution data that was used to calculate the weather routes, click anywhere on the coloured route lines to see a pop up box with the high resolution data or click on Tables and see the data in the Wind Tables.

If you are seeing a difference between the route and map, it is the difference between the 1km/ 8 km forecast data (Highest resolution data available) that the weather router uses versus the 50/100km resolution GRIB/Map. In short treat the Pop up box and Table Table data as the most accurate.

Here is an article on the weather models we are using for Weather Routing. Models used in Weather Routing

In the Offshore App

When using the Offshore App, most customers choose to download 50km or 100km GRIB maps to reduce the download file size.

Downloading the low resolution (50km or 100km) does not matter, as the weather route has all the high resolution data sent to you in the small weather route file. Click anywhere on the coloured route line to see a pop up box with the highest data or click on tables and see the data in the wind tables. The 50km or 100km GRIB gives you a synoptic overview of the weather.

You can view the High Resolution GRIBs by following this article if you have high speed internet. Here
