If you have turned on Over the Horizon AIS, and there are still no targets or fewer target than you expected on your MFD, here are some troubleshooting steps you can go through.
Firstly, check that you have linked your professional PredictWind account to the DataHub
Connect your computer or mobile device to the DataHub Wi-Fi network. PW-Hub-XXXX
Open a Web browser and enter 10.10.10.1
Log in using admin as the username and admin as the password
Under Settings> Account, check your status says professional, if not please add your account username and password, then click SAVE & APPLY.
Secondly check the DataHub is sending targets to your NMEA feed
1. In the NMEA menu, please click the top menu Syslog tab. If the AIS Target refresh shows the status: "Success", it is working. Check the number of vessels downloaded, as this will indicate how many targets the DataHub is receiving before filtering to publish the unique targets only onto the N2K network.
TOO MANY TARGETS
If you have a lot of targets it may be too many for your chartplotter
Older chartplotters may struggle to load and track hundreds of AIS targets because they were not designed to handle this volume; for example, we received a report of a Furuno MFD that could not display more than 100 AIS targets. A Raymarine could only load 200 targets and Garmin devices and the Navionics App have also been reported to display only up to 75 miles of AIS targets.
Check how many targets your MFD will actually be able to show.
You could reduce the range close inshore so you don't have so many targets, and increase it to 300NM while offshore.
TOO FEW TARGETS
If you only have a few targets, check on your PredictWind app or website in Tools > AIS , to see if there are more targets in the area. Make sure you are looking at a similar target age for the AIS boats. The DataHub target age default is 45 Mins, so change the PredictWind App AIS age to 90 minutes or more as a test
Not all boats are picked up offshore by satellite AIS receivers and show on the AIS feed. We have found that most cruising boats (Class B vessels) do not have suitable AIS for accurate and consistent Satellite AIS tracking offshore. If you do not see a boat on Over the Horizon AIS, it might just be the boat has got a B Class AIS transponder and the signal is not strong enough to reach the satellite. If the B Class Vessel comes within 25NM of your DataHub, is picked up by your AIS receiver and you have turned on "Enable AIS to Internet" from your DataHub: you will act as an AIS Aggregator, and your DataHub will share nearby AIS targets back to PredictWind,
contributing to improved vessel visibility and safety for all users, both coastal and offshore, by providing situational awareness, collision avoidance, and the ability to locate nearby vessels in an emergency.
I ONLY SEE MY VHF TARGETS NOT DATAHUB TARGETS
This may be because your MFD can only display a limited number of targets. To test, turn off or disconnect power temporarily to your AIS unit. Then the DataHub will not see local AIS targets, and publish all AIS targets it can to the N2K for your chartplotter to see.
Allow 5-10 minutes for the new targets to come through from the DataHub.
You will see new lines every minute in the syslog. You may need to refresh that page and note the times.
When you select the target on the plotter, and look at its data, you should see the callsign DataHub. This is how you know it has come in from OHA through PredictWind.
