The PredictWind Website now includes My Location, making it quicker and easier to view forecasts for your current area without having to create or save a forecast location first.
You can also easily switch between your saved forecast locations and My Location using the location drop-down menu at the top of the page.
View forecasts for your current location
The PredictWind Website can now use your IP address to determine your approximate location and display the forecast for that area, without requiring you to save a location first.
This is particularly useful when travelling or visiting a new area and you want to quickly check the local forecast.
To view the forecast for your current location:
Log in to your account using the PredictWind Website.
Click the location drop-down menu at the top of the page.
Select My Location.
The Website will use your IP address to determine your approximate location and display the forecast for that area.
Note: Unlike the PredictWind App, which uses your device's GPS, the PredictWind Website uses your IP address to determine your approximate location. IP-based locations are not always precise and may sometimes show a location some distance from where you actually are. Using a VPN may also affect the location detected.
Do I still need to save forecast locations?
No. If you simply want to check the forecast for your approximate current location, you can now do so without saving a location.
However, you can still create and save forecast locations for places you regularly visit or want to monitor, making it easy to return to them whenever needed.
Saving a location is also recommended if you want to view forecasts for a specific position, rather than relying on the approximate location detected from your IP address.
Important for water-based activities: If you are sailing, boating or taking part in other water-based activities, we recommend saving a forecast location directly on the water rather than relying on My Location. Weather conditions and forecasts can differ significantly between land and water, particularly in coastal areas. Selecting a location on the water helps ensure you are viewing the most relevant marine forecast.
How does My Location select the forecast?
When you select My Location, the PredictWind Website uses your IP address to determine your approximate geographical position and find a suitable forecast location nearby.
Where available, this may include our high-resolution 1 km forecast models, providing more detailed local forecast information.
The forecast location selected by the Website may differ from your actual position. For example, if your IP address indicates you are near the coast, the Website may select a nearby forecast location over the water rather than on land.
Because IP addresses do not provide the same level of location accuracy as GPS, the location selected may sometimes be further away than expected.
Note: It is not possible to prevent My Location from automatically selecting a nearby forecast location over the water, where available. If you prefer to view the forecast for a specific location on land, you will need to save that location manually rather than use My Location. This ensures the forecast location remains fixed at your chosen position.
