Synoptic Map – Understanding Weather Pressure Systems

View high and low pressure systems, isobars and atmospheric pressure patterns on the PredictWind Map.

What is the Synoptic Map?

The Synoptic Map provides an overview of atmospheric pressure systems, helping you understand larger-scale weather patterns and how they may affect your local forecast.

The map displays:

  • High (H) and Low (L) pressure systems, showing the location of major weather systems.

  • Isobars, lines connecting areas of equal atmospheric pressure.

  • Labelled pressure contours, showing barometric pressure values in hectopascals (hPa).

Isobars that are close together indicate a stronger pressure gradient, generally associated with stronger winds. Isobars spaced further apart typically indicate lighter winds.

How to access the Synoptic Map?

The Synoptic Map is available as a standalone map in the PredictWind App, but you can also display the isobars as an overlay on selected forecast maps.

  1. Open the PredictWind App.

  2. From the main menu, select Synoptic Map to view the pressure systems and labelled isobars.

  3. Alternatively, you can overlay the isobars on the Wind, Rain and Custom Maps by toggling Isobars ON in the Forecast Options box.

This allows you to view atmospheric pressure patterns alongside your selected weather forecast.
