MOB - Overview

A simple way to quickly alert your crew and key contacts ashore if someone falls overboard.

Written by Matt Crockett

What is Man Overboard?

PredictWind Man Overboard alerts your crew and contacts ashore if someone becomes separated from the boat.

Using the PredictWind Man Overboard app with DataHub Pro, your phone or smartwatch stays connected to your boat while you are sailing. If that connection is lost, Man Overboard can alert the crew onboard and, when available, notify your chosen contacts ashore.

Peace of mind for everyone onboard and ashore

Man Overboard is designed to provide an extra layer of time-critical protection while sailing. It can:

  • Alert your crew quickly if someone becomes separated from the boat.

  • Notify the race committee or friends and family ashore so they know when a Man Overboard event has been detected.

  • Send the MOB position to compatible onboard navigation systems to help the crew respond.

  • Give friends and family greater peace of mind while you are sailing, knowing the system is monitoring the connection between you and the boat.

What do I need to try it?

To get started with the beta, you need:

  • A DataHub Pro onboard.

  • A PredictWind Professional Forecast subscription.

  • The PredictWind Man Overboard app on a supported phone or smartwatch.

  • Your compatible phone or smartwatch device connected to the DataHub Pro while sailing.

If your boat has an NMEA 2000/N2K-compatible chartplotter and GPS, Man Overboard can integrate with your onboard navigation system.

Does it need Internet?

The core Man Overboard monitoring works directly between your device and DataHub Pro via Wi-Fi. An Internet connection is required for notifying contacts ashore.
