How to download GRIB files

From the GRIB page in the Offshore App, drag the red Start and green Finish waypoints to your route. The white GRIB box on the map automatically adjusts to cover the route area. You can resize the GRIB area by dragging the corners of the white box. Once you have selected your GRIB area, select the Download button from the bottom of the main menu. This will open the Download Settings page, where you can customise exactly what forecast data you want to download.

Under GRIB Preferences, you can select:

  • Forecast Models – choose which weather models you would like to download.

  • Interval – select the time interval between each forecast step. A longer interval, such as 12 or 24 hours, will reduce the download file size.

  • Days – choose how many days of forecast data you require.

  • Resolution – select the GRIB resolution. A lower resolution will result in a smaller download.

  • Forecast Variables – select the information you would like included, such as Wind, Rain, Pressure, Wave, Gust, CAPE, Cloud and Air Temperature.

The Offshore App is designed for use over satellite and low-bandwidth connections, so these settings allow you to control the amount of data you download. The estimated file size is displayed before downloading, allowing you to adjust your selections if required.

Once you are happy with your settings, start the download. When complete, the latest GRIB forecast data will be available to view on the map, including when you are offline.

How to view downloaded GRIB files

Once the download is complete, select GRIB from the main menu to view the forecast data on the map.

Tap the Forecast Options box in the bottom-right corner to switch between the weather models and forecast variables you downloaded, such as Wind, Rain, Pressure or Wave.

Use the time controls to step through or animate the forecast and see how conditions are expected to develop over time

Your downloaded GRIB files remain available in the Offshore App and can be viewed when you are offline.
