When you are on passage, you may need Internet access to download essential weather data and use your PredictWind apps only, while avoiding unnecessary data use from other devices and apps on board.
PredictWind Mode lets you do this with one setting, in one click.
When enabled, supported PredictWind apps and DataHub services continue to work while other Internet traffic routed through the DataHub Pro is blocked.
Important: PredictWind Mode is designed to reduce unwanted background data use on metered Internet connections, such as Starlink Ocean Mode. It does not compress PredictWind data, limit how much data PredictWind apps can use, or act as a data quota.
Before you start
Update your DataHub Pro to firmware 4.56 or later.
Connect your phone, tablet, or computer to the DataHub Pro.
Open a Chrome or Safari web browser and go to 10.10.10.1
Your DataHub Pro must have at least one active Internet connection, such as Ethernet WAN, Wi-Fi hotspot, built-in LTE Modem, or USB tether.
Important: PredictWind Mode cannot make a communication device firewall less restrictive. If your Iridium GO! exec, PredictWind DataHub Pro SIM plan, or upstream Internet device (e.g. Peplink router) has its own firewall, traffic must also be allowed by that firewall or it will not work whether PredictWind Mode is enabled or not.
Enable PredictWind Mode
In the DataHub Pro web interface, select Services > Settings > Internet Status.
Scroll to PredictWind Mode.
Select the green colour ENABLE button.
When PredictWind Mode is enabled:
The button changes to red colour DISABLE.
The Firewall Policy changes to Allow PredictWind Services / All Else Blocked.
Block WAN cannot be used at the same time because PredictWind Mode manages the firewall policy for you.
Internet traffic from connected devices is restricted to supported PredictWind services and any domains you have added under Whitelist Domains.
What you can expect when using PredictWind Mode
Supported PredictWind and DataHub services continue to work, while general Internet traffic such as web browsing, streaming, cloud syncing, software updates, and other background traffic is blocked. Local network devices and the management page of a directly connected upstream router remain accessible.
Your phone, tablet, or computer may report No Internet Connection, Limited connectivity, or similar while still remaining connected to the DataHub Pro Wi-Fi. This can be normal when PredictWind Mode is enabled.

These services still use your Internet connection normally. PredictWind Mode does not apply additional compression to them.
Maps and charts still use data
Maps and charts in PredictWind apps continue to work.
Panning, zooming, downloading forecasts, and other normal app activity can still use a meaningful amount of data.
PredictWind Mode is most useful for reducing unrelated background use such as:
Automatic app and operating system updates
Cloud photo syncing
Social media
Streaming services
Background traffic from other apps
If you use PredictWind apps extensively, that traffic still uses your Internet connection at its normal rate.
PredictWind webcams and video
Embedded webcam and video content is deliberately blocked because video can consume large amounts of data.
This includes PredictWind webcam content delivered through services such as YouTube or other video-hosting platforms.
Facebook sign-in
Facebook SSO is not supported while PredictWind Mode is enabled.
Allowing the Facebook domains required for sign-in would also allow much more Facebook traffic, which defeats the purpose of PredictWind Mode.
For the simplest setup, we recommend signing in to PredictWind services using your email address.
Allow an additional website or service
You can add your own domains to the PredictWind Mode whitelist.
This may be useful if you want to allow a service such as WhatsApp, Microsoft Teams, Slack, or webmail while keeping other Internet traffic blocked.
Select Services > Settings > Firewall.
Under Whitelist Domains, select +.
Enter the domain you want to allow, for example
example.com.Add any other domains required by that service.
Select SAVE & APPLY.
Adding example.com also allows its subdomains, such as www.example.com.
Your custom whitelist is remembered when PredictWind Mode is turned off and will be used again the next time you enable it.
Important: Traffic to domains you add to Whitelist Domains is no longer blocked by PredictWind Mode.
Some services use several different domains. Check the service provider's documentation and add each domain required for the functionality you want.
For example, adding one domain for a messaging or email service may not be enough if that service also uses separate domains for login, calls, file transfers, or notifications.
Disable PredictWind Mode
Select Services > Settings > Internet Status.
Under PredictWind Mode, select DISABLE.
Disabling PredictWind Mode deliberately returns the DataHub Pro firewall to:
Firewall Policy: All Open
Block DNS: Off
Normal Internet access is then restored, subject to any restrictions imposed by the active Internet connection, modem, SIM plan, or upstream firewall.
If a website still appears blocked immediately after disabling PredictWind Mode, your device may still have a cached DNS result.
Turn Wi-Fi off on the affected device, wait 10 seconds, then turn Wi-Fi back on and reconnect to the DataHub Pro.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my phone say there is no Internet connection?
This can be normal.
Phones and tablets perform their own Internet connectivity checks. PredictWind Mode may prevent some of these checks even though supported PredictWind and DataHub services continue to work.
Keep the device connected to the DataHub Pro Wi-Fi.
If you previously told your phone not to use the DataHub Pro Wi-Fi because it reported no Internet connection, you may need to forget the DataHub Pro Wi-Fi network and join it again.
One device does not work, but PredictWind Mode works on my other devices. What should I do?
On the affected device:
Turn Wi-Fi off.
Wait 10 seconds.
Turn Wi-Fi back on.
Reconnect to the DataHub Pro Wi-Fi.
If the device previously rejected the Wi-Fi network because it reported no Internet connection, forget the network first, then join it again.
Does PredictWind Mode reduce the amount of data used by PredictWind apps?
No.
PredictWind Mode is a firewall. It blocks unrelated Internet traffic but does not compress or reduce data transferred by services that are allowed.
If you download forecasts, browse maps, pan and zoom charts, or otherwise use PredictWind services extensively, that traffic continues to use your Internet connection normally.
Can I use Block WAN at the same time?
No.
Block WAN and PredictWind Mode are mutually exclusive.
PredictWind Mode automatically applies the firewall policy required to block other Internet traffic while allowing supported PredictWind and DataHub services.
Does PredictWind Mode work with LTE?
Yes, but the result depends on the SIM being used.
A customer-supplied, non-PredictWind SIM is treated like a normal Internet interface, so PredictWind Mode is applied to that LTE connection in the same way as Ethernet WAN, Wi-Fi Internet, or USB tether.
A PredictWind IoT SIM has its own, more restrictive firewall. Traffic must be allowed by both firewalls.
This means the PredictWind IoT SIM restrictions continue to apply whether PredictWind Mode is enabled or disabled.
What happens with an Internet device that has its own firewall?
Both firewalls apply, with the more restrictive rules determining what traffic can pass.
For example, an Iridium GO exec applies its own firewall rules closer to the Internet connection. If the GO exec firewall is more restrictive than PredictWind Mode, the GO exec rules take precedence.
Disabling PredictWind Mode does not override firewall restrictions applied by the Internet device itself.
Will my Whitelist Domains be lost when I turn PredictWind Mode off?
No.
Custom whitelist entries remain saved and are used again the next time PredictWind Mode is enabled.
Does PredictWind Mode guarantee that no unexpected data will ever be used?
No.
PredictWind Mode is designed to reduce normal and accidental Internet data use. It is not a data quota or zero-data guarantee.
Supported PredictWind services, DataHub services, and anything you add to Whitelist Domains can still use data.
Firewall changes can also take a short time to take full effect.
Troubleshooting
My device shows No Internet Connection or Limited connectivity
If supported PredictWind services still work, this can be normal.
Remain connected to the DataHub Pro Wi-Fi.
If the device has stopped trying to use the DataHub Pro Wi-Fi:
Forget the DataHub Pro Wi-Fi network.
Join it again.
Confirm the device remains connected.
I disabled PredictWind Mode but my device still cannot access the Internet
Your device may have cached a DNS response from while PredictWind Mode was enabled.
Turn Wi-Fi off.
Wait 10 seconds.
Turn Wi-Fi back on.
Reconnect to the DataHub Pro.
A specific app or website does not work
If it is not one of the supported PredictWind or DataHub services, PredictWind Mode will block it unless its required domains are added to Whitelist Domains.
Check the service provider's documentation for all required domains, then add them under:
Services > Settings > Firewall > Whitelist Domains
A whitelisted service only partly works
The service probably uses more than one domain.
Check which domains the service requires and add each required domain to Whitelist Domains.
Nothing works when the PredictWind IoT SIM is the active Internet connection
The PredictWind IoT SIM has its own firewall rules.
These can be more restrictive than PredictWind Mode and continue to apply whether PredictWind Mode is enabled or disabled.
Turning PredictWind Mode off does not remove the PredictWind IoT SIM restrictions.
Traffic is still blocked when using an Iridium GO exec or another Internet device
Check the firewall settings on the upstream Internet device.
PredictWind Mode cannot override a more restrictive firewall configured on the modem or Internet service.
A supported PredictWind or DataHub service does not work
Supported services listed in this article should work with PredictWind Mode.
Confirm that:
Your DataHub Pro is running firmware 4.56 or later.
The DataHub Pro has an active Internet connection.
The issue affects the supported service rather than only unrelated Internet access.
Turning Wi-Fi off for 10 seconds and reconnecting does not resolve the issue.
If the problem continues, contact PredictWind Support.
Important limitations
PredictWind Mode does not compress allowed traffic.
PredictWind Mode does not impose a data quota.
Embedded webcam and video services are intentionally blocked.
Facebook SSO is intentionally blocked.
Custom whitelisted services can use data through the domains you allow.
Services that depend on several domains require all necessary domains to be whitelisted.
Other firewalls on a modem, SIM plan, or upstream Internet device can impose additional restrictions.
Devices can temporarily retain cached DNS or network information after PredictWind Mode is enabled or disabled.
Firewall changes can take a short time to become fully effective.
