DataHub Pro : How to use Total Data Usage

See which devices are using Internet data, then reset the counters to start a new period.

Written by Matt Crockett

Total Data Usage combines downloads and uploads through all DataHub Pro Internet sources, including Ethernet WAN, Wi-Fi Internet and USB tethering. It counts usage whether PredictWind Mode is on or off.

Before you start

Use DataHub Pro firmware 4.58 or later and connect your phone, tablet or computer to DataHub Wi-Fi.

How to view your Total Data Usage in the DataHub Pro

  1. Open 10.10.10.1 in your browser and log in to the DataHub Pro using your admin credentials.

  2. Total Data Usage can be seen on the Services > Settings > Internet Status page.

  3. Scroll to Total Data Usage.

The panel shows Downloaded, Uploaded and combined Total usage since the last reset, with a breakdown by device.

The DataHub services row groups the DataHub’s own Internet use, including GPS Tracking, AI Polars, PredictMail, Whale Watch, Over the Horizon AIS, AIS to Internet, backups and firmware updates.

How to reset the DataHub Pro Total Data Usage counter

Selecting RESET clears both Total Data Usage and PredictWind Mode – Data Usage, including the device totals. This starts a new monitoring period.

Important Note: Record any figures you need to keep before resetting.

Frequently asked questions

How do I see data usage by device when PredictWind Mode is enabled?

Enable PredictWind Mode, then select RESET under Total Data Usage. Leave PredictWind Mode enabled for the period you want to measure.

Without resetting, Total Data Usage includes usage from before PredictWind Mode was enabled.

Why do some devices show only an IP address and not a name?

The DataHub Pro displays the name the device supplies through DHCP, such as MattBookPro-M2.

Devices that do not supply a name, including those that hide it for privacy, appear only by IP address, such as 10.10.10.146. Their usage is still counted.

How do I turn off Private Wi-Fi Address so I can see the device name?

iPhone or iPad: Open Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the ⓘ beside your connected network, then select Private Wi-Fi Address > Off and go back.

Mac: Open Apple menu > System Settings > Wi-Fi > Details beside DataHub Pro Wi-Fi. Set Private Wi-Fi Address to Off, then click OK.

Private Wi-Fi Address changes the device’s Wi-Fi MAC address, not its IP address. Turning it off does not guarantee that a device name will appear.

How can I rename my device?

iPhone and iPads: These will appear in the Total Data Usage list as 'iPhone' or 'iPad' when Private Wi-Fi Address is turned OFF. They cannot be renamed.

If you have multiple iPhones and iPad's aboard, open Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the ⓘ beside DataHub Wi-Fi, then scroll down to view the IPv4 Address.

Mac: Open the Apple menu > System Settings > General > About > Name. Add the device name and press Enter.

Windows 11 PC: Open the Windows menu > Settings > About > Rename this PC. Enter the device name, then click OK and restart your PC.

Android: This depends on your device manufacturer and Android OS. To rename a generic Android device, open Settings > About Phone > Device Name / Rename. Enter the device name, then tap OK.

Does usage survive a reboot?

Yes. A reboot preserves the counters. However, the DataHub Pro saves usage every 10 minutes, so disconnecting power can lose usage recorded since the last save.

Will this match my satellite or cellular provider’s usage?

Not necessarily. It combines all Internet sources and excludes traffic that bypasses the DataHub Pro, such as devices connected directly to Starlink or a Peplink router.

To monitor every onboard device, route each device’s Internet traffic through the DataHub Pro. Use your provider’s own app or account, such as Starlink or Iridium, to check metered usage.

Does the total include local traffic and blocked attempts?

Traffic between devices on the boat is not counted. Blocked by PredictWind Mode shows connection attempts, not megabytes used or saved.
