GMDSS marine weather information is a retransmission of The Global Ocean Observing System. National Meteorological Services initially supply the forecasts within the framework of the WMO Marine Broadcast System.
In PredictWind, GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) refers to official marine weather forecasts provided by various meteorological agencies. These forecasts cover important weather information for maritime safety, including hurricane activity, wind, wave, storm, fog and ice conditions.

It's important to view GMDSS forecasts regularly to stay informed about potential weather hazards, particularly during long ocean crossings, when navigating remote areas or when hurricanes are forming. Familiarising yourself with the graphical forecasts and accompanying text before departure is crucial, as these reports are prepared by meteorologists advising on adverse weather conditions.
Why does my weather map appear dark or shaded?
When the GMDSS graphical forecast overlay is enabled on weather maps such as Wind or Gust, large areas of the map may appear dark or shaded. This is caused by GMDSS weather warning areas being displayed over the regular weather map, not by your device's dark mode settings.
Some GMDSS warning areas cover very large regions, so the associated warning icon or text may be outside your current map view.
If your weather map appears unusually dark, try zooming out or moving around the map to locate the warning details. Alternatively, turn off the GMDSS overlay to return to your regular weather map display.
