At PredictWind, we are committed to advancing weather routing technology, helping you sail smarter and safer offshore. We're often asked how motoring will affect your polars when using the DataHub's Automatic AI Polar generation mode.

AI-Generated Polars: Maximizing Accuracy for Offshore Routing

Our AI polars use all collected boat data to reflect real-world performance, even if you motor into the wind. This ensures a comprehensive representation of how you actually use your boat. However, if motoring is rare, your custom polar will adjust accordingly — more data leads to greater accuracy.

Any information outside expected sailing conditions — such as drift fishing — will be discarded to maintain data integrity.

What Makes PredictWind's AI Polars Different?

Unlike traditional 2D polars, our AI-generated polars are 5-dimensional and incorporate wave forecast data. This is essential for a realistic performance model, as conventional polars assume flat water conditions. Our AI accounts for primary, secondary, and tertiary wave states, making routing calculations more precise.

Think of your data as organized into hundreds of folders, each representing different wave conditions. As new data is collected, it is sorted and analyzed within these folders, continuously refining your boat's performance model.

How AI Polars Adapt to Your Sailing Style

If you motor twice in similar conditions but sail eight times, the AI will prioritize sailing data for those conditions. Over time, it tailors its predictions to match how you actually sail, ensuring the most accurate ETA and routing decisions.

Enabling automatic polars allows the system to learn and optimize continuously. We encourage you to test this feature and experience the benefits of machine learning in offshore routing.

You can always revert to a previous polar based on a specific date, but keep in mind that it will have fewer data points and may not offer the same level of accuracy in forecasting your ETA and fastest route.

How to select and use a specific AI Polar for Weather Routing

To select a specific AI Polar to use for sail routing:

  1. On a PC or Mac, log in to https://forecast.predictwind.com, then go to the Weather Routing > Sail Routing.

  2. From the Routing Preferences tab, select AI Polar as your boat type.

  3. Uncheck the tick box: Use my latest AI Polar.

  4. Select the date of the AI Polar from the drop-down box to the right.
