Connect your DataHub Pro to an external Signal K server on your onboard network and use it as the source for NMEA data.
Before you start
Your DataHub Pro must be running firmware 4.42 or later. If it is running an earlier version, update it to 4.54 or later before configuring Signal K: DataHub Pro: How to update the Firmware.
You also need an external Signal K server that is already running and reachable from the DataHub Pro. You will need to know its IP address or hostname, port, and whether the server requires SSL/TLS.
Note: The IP address shown in the screenshots below is only an example. Do not copy 10.10.10.55 unless that is actually the address of your Signal K server.
Configure the Signal K server
Connect your laptop or tablet to the DataHub Pro Wi-Fi or a DataHub Pro LAN port
Open your Safari or Chrome browser to 10.10.10.1.
Log in to the DataHub Pro using your admin credentials.
Under Services, select NMEA.
On the NMEA Settings page, select the Source tab.
Open the Source menu and select Signal-K Server from the drop-down list.
In Host/IP, enter the hostname or IP address of your Signal K server.
Important Note: If the server is connected directly to the DataHub Pro network, it may have a DataHub Pro subnet address such as10.10.10.55.
If it is located on another onboard network, it may instead have an address such as192.168.1.x. Use the actual address assigned to your Signal K server. The DataHub Pro must have network connectivity to that address.
In Port, enter the port your Signal K server uses.
The standard Signal K server port is 3000. If you have configured your server to use another port, enter that port instead.
Leave SSL/TLS disabled for a typical unencrypted Signal K connection. If your Signal K server has been configured to require SSL/TLS, enable this option.
Click SAVE & APPLY.
You will be logged out of the DataHub Pro. Log back in using your admin credentials if required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the DataHub Pro include a Signal K server?
No. The DataHub Pro does not run its own Signal K server.
It can connect to an external Signal K server on your onboard network and use that server as its NMEA data source.
The Signal K server may be connected directly to the DataHub Pro network or may be located elsewhere on your onboard network, provided the DataHub Pro can reach its IP address.
What IP address should I enter for the Signal K server?
Enter the actual IP address or hostname of your external Signal K server.
If the server is connected directly to the DataHub Pro network, it may have an address in the DataHub Pro subnet such as 10.10.10.55.
If the Signal K server is connected to another onboard network, its address may instead be something such as 192.168.1.x.
The address will depend on how your own onboard network has been configured. The example addresses in this article are not default Signal K server addresses.
What port should I use for Signal K?
The standard Signal K server port is 3000.
If your Signal K server is configured to use a different port, enter that port instead. The port configured on the DataHub Pro must match the port your Signal K server uses.
Should I enable SSL/TLS?
For a typical Signal K installation using an unencrypted local network connection, leave SSL/TLS disabled.
If you have specifically configured your Signal K server to require SSL/TLS, enable SSL/TLS on the DataHub Pro.
The DataHub Pro setting must match your Signal K server's configuration.
Where can I see the Signal K data received by the DataHub Pro?
After configuring Signal-K Server as the NMEA source, use the status tabs across the top menu of the DataHub Pro > Services > NMEA page to check the data being received.
Depending on the data available from your Signal K server and connected boat systems, information can be displayed under:
GPS
Navigation
Environmental
DC
Engine
You do not need to see information on every page. The values displayed depend on the data that is available from your onboard systems.
Troubleshooting
How do I check that the DataHub Pro is receiving data from my Signal K server?
After saving the Signal K settings, open Services > NMEA and select from the GPS, Navigation, Environmental, DC, and Engine tabs across the top menu
Start with GPS if your Signal K server provides GPS data. Then check the other status pages for the data you expect your onboard system to provide. For example, wind, heading, and depth information may appear on the Navigation screen.
Seeing valid values confirms that the DataHub Pro is receiving and processing those particular data items. It does not mean that every possible data value available on the Signal K server is being received.
Why can I see GPS data but no Navigation, Environmental, DC or Engine data?
If valid GPS information is displayed, the connection between the DataHub Pro and Signal K server is working for GPS data.
Missing information on another status page does not necessarily indicate that the Signal K connection has failed. First, check whether your Signal K server is actually receiving the corresponding information from your boat.
For example, the DataHub Pro cannot display engine information if no engine data is being supplied to the Signal K server.
Check the source data on the Signal K server first, then return to the relevant DataHub Pro > Services > NMEA > Top menu page.
Why is all of my Signal K data missing?
First, confirm that the external Signal K server is running. Then open Services > NMEA > Source on the DataHub Pro and check:
Source is set to Signal-K Server.
Host/IP matches the current IP address or hostname of your Signal K server.
Port matches the port configured on your Signal K server.
SSL/TLS matches your server configuration.
If the Signal K server uses DHCP, its IP address may have changed since the DataHub Pro was configured. Also confirm that the DataHub Pro has network connectivity to the network containing the Signal K server.
Why can't the DataHub Pro connect to a Signal K server on another onboard network?
The DataHub Pro must have a network path to the Signal K server's IP address. A server connected directly to the DataHub Pro may use a 10.10.10.x address, while equipment elsewhere on the boat may use a different subnet, such as 192.168.1.x.
Simply having both devices connected somewhere on the boat does not confirm that traffic can pass between those networks.
Check your router, subnet and network configuration and confirm that the DataHub Pro can reach the Signal K server's address.
Why does the GPS page show VOID or invalid GPS information?
This means the DataHub Pro does not currently have a usable GPS solution from the selected NMEA source.
First, check the Signal K server itself and confirm that it has a current GPS position, date and time.
