It is essential that you correctly mount the YB3i to ensure a strong GPS signal.

Please take a photo of the underside of the YB3i unit or write down the serial number before starting the install. You will need this number during the activation of your YB3i airtime plan.

The steps below will answer any questions relating to running the cable, power source, voltage, mounting, GPS signal etc.

YB3i Installation:

  1. Your unit is equipped with both Iridium & GPS antennas located on the top ‘domed’ part of your casing. For the best results, it is important to be mindful of the orientation of your device when in use.

  2. To ensure a good satellite signal, the antenna should be clear of obstructions and have a clear view of the sky.

  3. We recommend installing on the pushpit or similar location, not on the mast.

Powering the Unit

  1. The device is designed to attach to your boats batteries 100% of the time, via the cable. However, it does have an internal rechargeable battery which is used should the unit lose power.

  2. The YB3i comes wired with 2.9 meters of cable from the factory. You may need to extend this to get it to your boat's distribution board. You should extend it with the same gauge cable and type. Ideally 1.5mm2 (16AWG) twin core with a sheath.

    Each wire core (Positive and Negative) should have 2 layers of insulation like the cable it comes with. Simply wire the positive and negative cores of the cable into a spare circuit in your distribution board.

  3. This new feed should be fitted with a 2A fuse near the power source to protect the cable in the case of a short circuit of the cable.

  4. The unit will run on any DC voltage between 9v and 32v.

  5. On average the unit will draw about 350 milliamps under normal operation.

  6. Wiring should be carried out as per the following:

Standard 2-Wire

Brown (or Red): Live (9-32v DC)
White (or Black): Neutral (0v DC)
