Stay Safe and find the best conditions with PredictWind Alerts

Whether you're an offshore sailor navigating unpredictable weather, a kite surfer chasing the perfect wind, or a recreational boater planning a smooth trip, PredictWind Alerts help you stay ahead of changing conditions.

PredictWind offers two main types of alerts to help sailors stay informed about weather conditions: Extreme Weather Alerts and Forecast & Observation Alerts. Each serves a distinct purpose, ensuring you can make well-informed decisions at sea.

  • Forecast & Observation Alerts let you track wind, temperature, and other key conditions so that you can find the best spots for sailing, kite surfing, and other marine activities.

  • Extreme Weather Alerts provide life-saving notifications about storms, gales, and hazardous weather, ensuring you can take action before dangerous conditions strike.

With these tools, you can sail safer, catch the best wind, and make smarter decisions at sea.

What are PredictWind Alerts: Extreme Weather & Forecast Alerts

Extreme Weather Alerts

Extreme Weather Alerts notify you about severe weather conditions like storms, gales, and tropical cyclones. These alerts are based on forecasts from the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), which collects meteorologically prepared warnings worldwide. They are especially useful for offshore sailors who need real-time updates on hazardous weather.

Why Use Extreme Weather Alerts?

  • Stay informed about dangerous weather conditions like thunderstorms, storms, and high winds.

  • Alerts are delivered via mobile notifications and email for saved locations.

  • Helps sailors plan safer routes by anticipating extreme weather.

How to Enable Extreme Weather Alerts

  1. Ensure your PredictWind App is updated to version 5.8.0 or later.

  2. Log in to the app and select the location for which you want to receive alerts.

  3. In the main menu, go to Tools > Forecast Alerts.

  4. Tap Extreme Weather, then enable Notifications to Phone or Email.

  5. Click Save Changes.

You'll receive alerts whenever new extreme weather conditions are forecasted for your selected area. For more information and a step-by-step guide, including screenshots, see How to get Extreme Weather Alerts in the PredictWind App.

Forecast & Observation Alerts

These alerts allow you to monitor specific weather conditions, such as wind speed, direction, and temperature, based on customizable thresholds. Unlike Extreme Weather Alerts, these alerts are more localized and tailored to your preferences.

Forecast alerts are based on the smart forecast that considers all models and can be set to trigger up to 5 days in advance. This is the same forecast included in the Daily Briefing and summarized weather tables.

Observation alerts are based on real-time data from weather station observations.

Why Use Forecast & Observation Alerts?

  • Set alerts for specific weather conditions that affect your sailing plans.

  • Get notifications for forecasted or real-time observations at chosen locations.

  • Useful for coastal and nearshore sailing, where wind shifts and weather changes impact navigation.

How to Enable Forecast & Observation Alerts

  1. Open the PredictWind App and select a Location.

  2. In the main menu, under Tools > tap Forecast Alerts.

  3. Select the Alert type Forecast or Observation.

  4. Set your Forecast Alert conditions, or tap Set Station to select the observation station to base alerts from.

  5. Select a location and set conditions for wind speed, direction, or other weather factors.

  6. Choose to receive alerts via mobile notification or email.

  7. Save your settings, and alerts will be sent based on your criteria.

Which Alert Should You Use?

  • If you're offshore, live-aboard or cruising coastally and need critical weather warnings, Extreme Weather Alerts are essential.

  • If you need to track daily wind conditions or monitor specific weather factors, Forecast & Observation Alerts are more useful.

By enabling both, you ensure a comprehensive view of the weather, improving safety and navigation decisions at sea.
